i'm not ashamed to say that i frequent cinebarre at least twice a month. (it's the local movie joint that serves beer AND flavored popcorn. ) and that i occasionally indulge in a sappy romantic comedy (coughmarleyandmecough). but every now and then, i'll stumble across a trailer or three for movies that i know i absolutely, no way, no how, can miss in the theatre, and wait for that whole "they'll be at blockbuster in three months" thing. and this year, for some reason, i found myself going to the movies way more than i had the budget for. it was so worth it.
and last night, as we all know, was the capstone of the awards ceremonies in hollywood; the oscars. so being that this was one of the first years in my life that i actually saw every movie nominated for "best picture" (whooo, go slumdoggg.), i could actually input some educated criticism, so i feel the need to share. but i've decided to refrain from blabbering on about who deserved what and who didn't, because let's be honest, children, the winners won no matter what i think. instead, i felt the need to share my three favorite acceptance speeches.
after a historic year of elections, turmoil, frustration, and elation, it was incredible to see how people who are worth millions and millions, and live in mcmansions on hills far, far away in a surreal life, congregate in one auditorium, and collaborate over one thing i happen to know a lot about; art. despite the fact that america seems to be in the ditches lately, and that these people can still afford to wear diamonds worth more than many people's yearly incomes, they still gather for one purpose; to celebrate creativity. and that's worth preachin' on a soapbox about.
so on we go to my favorite acceptance speech.
unless you've been living under a rock, you know that there has been a law or two passed in different states around the country that prohibit people who practice alternative lifestyles from falling in love and living like the rest of society around them. and this man in particular, dustin lance black, happens to be one of them. and i don't care what you think about him, or his sexuality in particular, it's your own damn opinion. but, the fact that he used his award to encourage others like him, millions of others to be exact, around the U.S. of A. to keep living and be proud of who they are was frankly selfless, and absolutely motivational.
next, my second favorite.
skip to 1:45. my point exactly. (art=unity.)
lastly, my third and final speech choice. (& presentation.)
skip to 5:08 for the acceptance speech. no reason in particular about why i liked this one, i just thought the whole dedication piece before the award was announced was really touching, and i liked this segment in particular. and the reason i enjoyed kate winslet's speech? well, i just think she's absofreakinlutely precious, and i've had somewhat of an admiration for her since i was a mere 10 years old and watched titanic 14 times in the theatres. yepyep.
i told you, a movie freak-- there were signs at an early age.
anywhoo, that's about all i have to say about the oscars. i thought it was one of the better nights for the awards ceremony, there have been many programs in previous years that i've dozed off right around the cinematography point, and not stirred until the sun came up the next morning. but this year, i was pretty much on the edge of my seat all night, because it's rare for me, but i actually cared about who won "best picture." (please refer to previous post plugging slumdog.) but who i wanted to win, won, and i had fun listening to what these people who society are mildly obsessed with, had to say about their craft and the recognition they deserved. or didn't.
oh, and if anyone happens to have an extra twenty thousand buckaroos lying around the house, this dress would be GREATLY appreciated as a graduation present. please and thank you.
happy manic monday.
